Porridge Anytime
By: Pearlyn Chan
Porridge is one of my top favourite dishes and it is not easy to find one that suits my taste, especially since I’m a picky eater. There are various kinds of porridge, but nothing tastes as good as the one at “Hoe Kee Porridge”. The stall is located at Maxwell Food Centre and their porridge has garnered a lot of attention and support from the public since then. There’s a wide variety of porridge for you to choose from and each of them costs around $3.50-$4.50, which I thought was really cheap, considering the fact that their portions are quite generous. You can expect a big bowl of porridge right in front of you! Totally worth it! Besides just the porridge alone, they do serve other claypot dishes as well. You will definitely be spoilt for choices!

Their porridge is slowly boiled to perfection till the rice turns into a mushy sludge to give off a smooth and thick texture to it. It is certainly not grainy and does not taste bland at all. The porridge is then accompanied with generous amount of ingredients depending on the type of porridge you order. The most popular and tastiest dish by far would be their century egg porridge. Ingredients given were more than enough for one to finish. Apart from just century egg being present in the porridge, there are also other ingredients like sliced pork as well. Condiments like scallions, white pepper, soy sauce and deep fried shallots are usually added to make the porridge even tastier.

What’s porridge without any raw fish? Their raw fish is dipped in sesame oil with some scallions and sesame seeds. You can choose to squeeze some lime juice to give it a bouncy texture too. It goes perfectly well together with every spoonful of porridge. Definitely one of the must-try dish from their stall. If you don’t like raw fish, you can try their claypot tofu. It is yet another dish that compliments well with their porridge. Their handmade tofu is made from soya bean milk and egg, which is being deep- fried to give it a crispy texture and then drenched in soy sauce based gravy together with some shallots, spring onions and chilli at the top. Just by having a bite of it, its unique taste will still linger in your mouth, simply making it irresistible to have another bite again.

I feel that “Hoe Kee Porridge” beats Zhen Zhen porridge hands down, be it in terms of their portion, variety and the taste of their porridge. Every dish of the stall is generously made, which is what makes your money worth every single cent.
